Are Gifts Considered Income for Food Stamps
Gifts aren’t counted as income for determining Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility or benefit amounts. This is true for both gifts received in cash and those received in kind, like the value of a gift card or the worth of a donated vehicle. However, gifts transferred to an individual through an irrevocable trust or as payment for services do count as income. In order to receive SNAP benefits, households need to meet certain income and resource limits. For income, the gross limit can’t be more than 130% of the federal poverty level, and the net limit can’t be more than 100%.
